EBADI, RAHAMI FREED ON BAIL
PARIS 23 July (IPS) Mrs. Shirin Ebadi and Hojjatoleslam Mohsen Rahami, two prominent activist lawyers were released from prisonSaturday on a 10 million tuman (11.800 US Dollars) bail each, according to informed sources in Tehran.
Both lawyers were arrested 25 days ago on charges of producing and distributing a videocassette containing "confessions" of a former member of the Ansar Hezbollah, an Islamic pressure group formed to act as a "shock troop" against dissidents, mostly secularists.
In the videoatape, a certain Farshad Amir Ebrahimi who claims has "resigned" from the Ansar thugs discloses in chilling details the close collaboration and co-operation that exists between the Islamic vigilante in the one hand and some senior hard line clerics and high ranking Revolutionary Guards officers.
He also says that the Ansar is funded by the office of Ayatollah Ali Khameneh'i, the leader of the Islamic Republic and the organisation is routinely ordered by well known clerics to disrupt meetings of dissidents opposed to the concept of "velayat faqih", the corner stone of present Iranian theocratic system.
Speaking to the pro-reform daily "Bahar" (Spring), one of the last "survivors" of moderate press after the Judiciary closed last April almost all reformist publications on direct order from Mr. Khameneh'i, Mr. Rahami refuted the charges and reiterated that he had got copies of the video from Mrs. Ebadi and handed them to the Supreme Council for National Security and the Security Department of Higher Education Minister while for her colleague had provided another copy to Mr. Mostafa Tajzadeh, an Deputy Interior Minister who was supposed to be assassinated by the Ansar, according to Mr. Amir Ebrahimi.
Hojjatoleslam Rahami is attorney for Hojjatoleslam Abdollah Nuri, a former Interior Minister and Publisher of the banned pro-reform "Khordad" daily who was arrested on orders from the controversial Clergymen's Special Tribunal (CST) on the "package charges" that contains questioning Islam's basic laws, slanders, confusing public opinion and failing respect to the leader etc.
During his defence, Mr. Nuri said several times that he does not recognise the CST as a legal institution and refuses to answer the charges.
Mr. Rahami is also lawyer for the students who badly suffered from the night raid mounted against the students dormitories last year at around this time by units of the Law Enforcement Forces, the Ansar hooligans and special units of the Intelligence Ministry, resulting in at least one student killed and many others wounded as some of them had been thrown out of the windows by the attackers.
On the other hand, Mrs. Ebadi, a well known human rights activist, is defending some of the families of the famous "chain murder case", including children of the leaders of the secularist Iranian People's Party (IPP) Dariush and Parvaneh Foruhar savagely assassinated in their residence in Tehran late November 1998 by high ranking officers of the Intelligence Ministry.
