PRINCE REZA PAHLAVI URGES IRANIANS TO UNITE SAVING THEIR NATION
PARIS 14 Mar. (IPS) A combative Iranian Prince Reza Pahlavi called Tuesday on
all Iranian democratic forces inside and outside the country to join hands to
"save the nation from extinction" brought upon by the present
theocratic system of government.
Speaking to reporters at the Press Club de France in Paris, the 41 years-old son of the Iranian deposed Monarch Mohammad Reza Shah said both internal and international situations have encouraged him to come forward uniting Iranians, offering new strategies for changing peacefully the present Iranian regime.
He said he was not after a special system of government at this stage, but he struggles for a regime where all Iranians, regardless of their ethnics or religion or ideologies could equally play their share in securing peace, prosperity and modernity.
"Twenty two years of chaos, international isolation, economic recession, brutal repression and corruption are threatening the future of Iran as a nation", Mr. Pahlavi said.
He said while in the West the situation in Iran is portrayed as one of struggle between reformists and conservatives, the reality is that the regime has lost its legitimacy in the eyes of the population who seek freedom, justice, equality, progress and participation in the international orchestra.
"This is a critical moment in my country’s history and I’m here to tell you that the time has finally arrived to write a new chapter in the history of my homeland, a history that ends this brutal regime and assures all Iranian freedom, democracy, human rights and economic opportunities", the young Pahlavi pointed out.
"While Western news headlines describes the dynamics in Iran as a struggle between a reformist Khatami and radical conservatives, the real issue however is not which faction of the Islamic Republic can meet the demands of the Iranian people, but what system besides an Islamic Republic can save Iran", he further added.
Asked about his current visit to Europe, Mr. Reza Pahlavi said during his hour long press conference that was broadcast live through Los-Angeles-based independent "Voice of Iran" that it is "designed" to raise the level of international awareness over the real plight of the Iranian people.
"My goal is simple, achievable and straightforward", he said, emphasising that he envisions an Iran where everyone is free, regardless of his origin, religion, sex or ideology, an Iran where the press is free from intimidation, where people can speak freely and without fear, where prisoners are not tortured, where politicians and intellectuals are not harassed, imprisoned and tortured".
Mr. Pahlavi said in order to launch his new drive, he has established contacts with a number of Iranian activists inside and outside the country and the response he has received so far was encouraging.
He added that he dreamed of a South Africa-like solution where a commission for truth and reconciliation could help people to move forward while forgetting about revenge.
Asked to comment on the European Union policy of constructive dialogue with Iran, Mr. Pahlavi said though he did not want to interfere in the affairs of other states, yet he invites all leaders who are interested in doing business with this regime to also push for the respect of human rights and freedoms.
"I ask the European Community not forget that everyday in my country, basic human freedoms of speech, thought, press and assembly, taken for granted in the West, are brutally crushed. Not a day goes by without reports of new arrests, disappearances and harassment of citizens, journalists and those with alternate points of views. Europe must care, and not allow such acts unchallenged", he observed.
He said the west must realise that Hojjatoleslam Mohammad Khatami is not the Iranian Gorbachov or Yeltsin, but just a religious who wants to save the present theocratic system by giving it some face-lift. ENDS REZA PAHLAVI 14301
