MEHRANGIZ KAAR SAYS HER HUSBAND IS IN REAL DANGER OF BEING KILLED*
PARIS 17 May (IPS) In a strongly worded letter to the members of the Article
90 Committee of the Iranian Majles, or parliament, Mrs Mehranguiz Kaar warns
that her husband, Siamak Poorzand is "really in danger of being killed by
the authorities of the Islamic Republic on charges he never committed".
"From the news that comes out of the Islamic Republic as well as those published by international organisations, it seems that they are killing Siamak Poorzand under interrogation in an unknown prison on charges he has never committed and is already half conscious", she stated in her long, accusatory letter.
The open letter, dated 16 May 2002, states that not only the news she get from Iran, but also the "heavy silence" of the members of the Article 90 Committee and their failure to answer her prior requests to inform the people about the situation of her husband have added to her worries concerning the 71 years-old Poorzand.
Here are large excerpts from the letter
"Seven months after the disappearance of Siamak Poorzand and in conditions that hopes to see him alive narrows, Judge Saberi Zafarqandi, the respected president of the "special" court number 1610 situated at the Mehrabad Airport has stated that Mr. Poorzand had been taken to a special military unit (that apparently has no name or address) to be interrogated on the "moharebeh" (fighting God) charges.
"Information published in the "Iran" daily (the government’s tribune) and "No Rooz" are astonishing. It seems that several sentences have been decided against Siamak Poorzand and each time one of them is published, according to the day’s conditions...
"Until few days ago, one was insisting on 7 and then 8 years of imprisonment. The eight years sentence was published by "Iran" daily. But on 25 Ordibehesht (15 May), the Captain decided otherwise, increasing the verdict to 11 years, plus flogging and finally "moharebeh" (accompanied with harsh words that experts understands) has been considered.
"It seems that after seven months, those who are in relation with this case have decided to start from the scratch, adding to other unfounded accusations what they had not been able to get even under pressures, i.e. the charge of moharebeh, in order to give themselves a religious cover up for his death.
"It seems that one has decided to apply and experience on a 71 years-old man all the harsh articles of Iran’s penal laws.
"It seems that during the revolution 24 years ago, Siamak Poorzand had lived in hiding and that they have found him now. Closing their eyes on the fact that not only during all these years Siamak Poorzand was in this country, but also he had been very active in the cultural and press fields, they consider him as the main reason and factor for all failures and defeats and wanted to hang him instead…
After telling the members of the Article 90 Committee that as a lawyer with 20 years of law, press and cultural experience, she is "well aware" of the obstacles Iranian lawmakers faces, no immune to sabotage from specific groups to the point "to see their surveillance activities shut", and adding that she also knows that the authorities are not able to answer their requests, leave alone the "rogue and illegal centres of which every one is afraid of", Mrs. Kaar continue:
"Though it is quite possible that you too, under the yoke of those who first creates rumours and cultivates them in their own press markets in order to develop them into judicial cases, could do nothing, yet, this reality do not apprehend on the right of Siamak Poorzand and his children, nor does it explain your silence.
"Once again, I warn you that in case you do nothing about this rumour mongered case, the death of Poorzand at the hands of those obeying orders is a matter of certainty.
"The third decade of the revolution, the problems, pains and difficulties the Iranian society faces, international conditions and specially the importance of providing a clear-cut definition of national security brings you, as the representatives of the Iranian people, to break the borders of we and them. Believe me, if you had eyed all Iranians equally, reforms would not have faced the dead end it is experiencing, for, one can not cure Iran’s problems, a country rich of different cultures and ideas, with keeping alive the we and them frontiers
Sirs
"After having stated the above-mentioned facts about this wholly fabricated case, let me now ask you:
How do you explain the contradictions between the Prisons Organisation that says it has no information about the existence of Siamak Poorzand in its prisons (see No Rooz of 25/2/81=15/5/02 interview with Mr. Bakhtiari, the Head of Prisons Organsation) and that at the same time, Judge Saberi Zafarqandi says clearly that he (Poorzand) had been taken back to the same military unit that is placed under the control of the Prisons Organisation?
Siamak Poorzand is one of the victims of the policy of suppression; a policy planned and worked out years ago. In the past ten years, a press that is in line with this policy of suppression never left his family alone, unleashing whatever accusations, calumny and slanders with the aim of dishonouring them, slanders placed in Poorzand’s case by Judge Saberi Zafarqandi.
Once again, I warn that those who have commandeered and those in charge of executing the policy of suppression have decided to place Siamak Poorzand in the centre of a new plan and on the basis of extracted confessions (those of a 71 years-old man that, after seven months of solitary confinement and suffering all kind of psychological pressures, is half conscious and is now charged of moharebeh in order to justify his death), place a number of press and cultural activists in the hands of those in charge of the execution of the policy of suppression. The names of these people are on the list of the commanders of the policy of suppression, and would pretend that it was Siamak Poorzand who gave the names.
"I wish, in case the respected members of the Article 90 Committee of the Constitution of Islamic Republic could not save the half conscious Siamak Poorzand from the grip of the rogue and self-centrist groups and give him back alive to his children, at least prevent a disaster that is awaiting the nation’s cultural and thinking community. Think about your responsibilities, your engagements and pledges, because time is badly limited".
With all due respects
Mehrangiz Kaar
