EXECUTION OF 16 YEARS OLD GIRL OUTRAGES PUBLIC OPINION

Published Friday, August 27, 2004

PARIS, 27 Aug. (IPS) Iranians and international community expressed outrage at reported execution of the 16-year-old Ateqeh Rajabi on vague charges of un-Islamic behaviour.

EXECUTION OF 16 YEARS OLD GIRL OUTRAGES PUBLIC OPINION-Body-2

According to Press reports from the Islamic Republic, Ms. Rajabi was publicly hanged on a street in the city centre of Neka in the northern province of Mazandaran, on 15 August, for "acts incompatible with chastity".

Faced with domestic and international outcry of dismay, the authorities said the young girl was “mentally incompetent”.

However, informed sources revealed that Ms. Ateqeh was sentenced to death by the judge, a cleric, because during the "trial", she expressed outrage at the misogyny and injustice in the Islamic Republic and its Islam-based judicial system.

“The lower court judge was so incensed by her protestations that he personally put the noose around her neck after his decision had been upheld by the Supreme Court”, the sources reported.

The execution of Ateqeh Rajabi is the tenth execution of a child offender in Iran recorded by Amnesty International since 1990. Amnesty International has urged Iran’s judicial authorities to halt further executions of child offenders - people who were under 18 years old at the time of the offence. This is to bring Iran’s law and practice in line with requirements of international human rights law.

Amnesty International that expressed “outrage” at the execution of the young girl believes that the execution of Ateqeh Rajabi underlines the urgent necessity that Iran pass legislation removing provision for the execution of child offenders, thereby preventing further execution of child offenders, and bringing Iran into line with its obligations under international law.

In an article published Friday 27 August 2004 in the Germany-based internet newspaper Iran Emrooz, Dr. Hoseyn Baqer Zadeh, an Iranian human rights activist observed that the laws of the Islamic Republic are the “most inhuman, segregationist, insulting and discriminatory” against women.

“While, according to Islam-based laws, a woman accused of adultery faces capital punishment, a man can have several wives and commits adultery without punishment”, he observed.

Actually, a man who murdered his wife during her trial in a court in Shahr Rey near Tehran had been acquitted by the court that was judging the case of the woman accused of relations with another man “outside marriage”.

Interestingly, female lawmakers at the present conservatives-dominated Majles, or parliament have opposed attempts by lawyer Shirin Ebadi, the human rights activist and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2003 for improving the conditions of women in Iran.

Amnesty International is alarmed that this execution was carried out despite reports that Ateqeh Rajabi was not believed to be mentally competent, and that she reportedly did not have access to a lawyer at any stage.

The Islamic Republic are the “most inhuman, segregationist, insulting and discriminatory” against women

According to report on “Peyk-e Iran” internet website, Rajabi was sentenced to death approximately three months ago, by a lower court in Neka in the northern Iranian province of Mazandaran, for "acts incompatible with chastity".

During her trial, at which a lawyer did reportedly not represent her, the judge allegedly severely criticised her dress, harshly reprimanding her. It is alleged that Rajabi was mentally ill both at the time of her crime and during her trial proceedings.

But experts have not confirmed this. On the same night that she was buried, unknown individuals reportedly removed Ateqeh’s corpse from the grave. The Rajabi family have lodged a complaint and have called for an investigation.

The co-defendant of Ateqeh Rajabi, an unnamed man, was reportedly sentenced to 100 lashes. He was released after this sentence was carried out

It is reported that although Ateqeh’s national ID card stated that she was 16 years old, the Mazandaran Judiciary announced at her execution that her age was 22.

The Supreme Court upheld the death sentence and Ateqeh Rajabi was publicly hanged in the city centre of Neka on 15 August.

The co-defendant of Ateqeh Rajabi, an unnamed man, was reportedly sentenced to 100 lashes. He was released after this sentence was carried out.

A bill to raise the minimum age for execution to 18 was reportedly under consideration by parliament in December 2003. However, the bill is believed to have been not ratified by the Guardian Council, Iran’s highest legislative body.

As a party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Iran is bound not to execute child offenders. Both treaties provide that capital punishment shall not be imposed for offences committed by persons under 18 year of age at the time of committing the offence. ENDS ATEQEH EXECUTED 27804

I think this was wrong, I saw the video on youtube as well and I'm disappointed to see that this is being done. My question to the public is why does the women gets the blame, the execution, or gets accused for having sexual relationship with other men. Doesn't the public or the people that make the law of Iraq know or understand that their men can be forcing women to do this. I have heard many times that many third world countries don't care what the men do but if a women does something wrong they make big issues, if you want to look at from the Islam's point of view then this is not the teaching of Mohammad. Islam teaches us equality and if you call yourselves Muslim then believe that too!

IN response to the "half-wit" Charles. Negotiation and bargaining are much more successful than full scale war. To say that we should close the door to talks and influencing is damning us (US) to global failure as we (US)cannot be the WORLD peacekeepers or NATION BUILDERS.

It's so very tragic to read about women's executions in the name of "male" hatred towards women as a whole, their dominance and obvious bravado for that sort of carnage! And to shove that kind of extremism under the carpet in the name of Islam is incomprihensible! No wonder there is so much unrest in the middle east, where revenge, unjust laws and the inability to comprehend diplomacy runs rampant. The condoners of such atrocities will meet their Maker and justice will be served. In the meantime, it saddens me to know that many more situations like this will occur before (if ever) it get's any better.

This is horrible, very horrible.

But being a female Muslim, let me assure you...this is NOT Islam. Not at all.

May this poor girl rest in peace.

Ayesha says this is not Islam, but it obviously is Islam.....one of its many forms. Just as judaism has many forms, Islam has all kinds of orthodox, and reformed, and maniacal fanatics, too. When so many thousands of muslims and their governments are acting like mindless, brainless monsters, murdering innocent people senselessly, they are defining Islam of today. Islam is allowing this to go on. Islam is responsible. Damn all religion to hell if there were a hell. Hang all the stupid vicious mullahs by their balls...every last one of them, and put all their followers on a desert island. Let them kill each other. The sooner the better. They are lower than rat shit, and deserve to be exterminated. They are not human. They are mentally ill like all who are mesmerized and controlled by evil dogma and fear.

Religion is stupidity, and those who kill in its name are stupid. One day real wisdom will come to these people and they will begin to think for themselves. That will be the day when religion, the curse of all mankind, the bane of civilisation, will finally disappear from the earth, allowing rational peace to prevail over the world. John Lennon said it all. "Imagine no religion."

Hello Tabitha!??!! This is a weird coincidence lol. This is just another example of the devolved minds of people (generally male) given an inch of power and abuse it to compensate for the inches of their dicks which are clearly missing...why is it in these dogmatic societies when a woman is raped, in several instances, she is punished (usually by death if the family decrees it, as she is "unclean") yet the man gets away with it?It needs to STOP. These men are descending back into apes. Well, at least Iran has caught up with us a bit...I reckon theyre about in the 1500's now....witchunts and all. Its sick enough they do it in their own countries but they come over here and try and exhort their own ways on us too. And believe me, I have been harassed and insulted by middle easterners by a ratio of thirty or forty times to one westerner in my years...these males in question shouting derogatory and racist comments at me-whilst I was wearing JEANS. Im just glad that I live in a relatively tolerant society where kicking these males in the balls only gets a few more insults and not a public flogging.

there never was any "god". god is a fantasy. this fantasy has caused untolled death and misery ever since the first human used the god fantasy to explain his world. Each religious culture has sufficiently scared its followers into thinking that they will be safe if they kiss the bum of their particular diety. They attack others physically sometimes, because they are different. This gives rise to bigotry, and genocide, and continues to breed ignorant people. Meanwhile, the only people who keep their intelligence and open minds are the scientists.

Jeffe I could not agree with you more! Religions across the world are for the mindless, spiritually lacking people in this world. They are for the weak of mind and soul. Genocide is what happened when religion was introduced in the world and the same holds true today.

I despise people's so called faith in a higher being, when they go around killing others in the name of a God who, if there is one, is likely a poor embarrassed being indeed. The human race has and always will be inherently evil in its actions..and if you think I am wrong, take another good look around you..look at all the unnecessary death all over the world. Look past your sheltered lives to the harsh reality of what humans are truly capable of...pure evil. Who needs a Satan anymore? Humans are far worse anyway..

Dear Rohan,

I agree with some of what youve said. I also despise people who commit horrid atrocities in the name of what they believe to be god, no matter what religion they claim to adhere to. I also agree--wholeheartedly--that human beings are fundamentally evil by nature; history proves that beyond a doubt. However, I must respectfully decline to place the blame solely and indescriminately on religion in general. While it is very true that much blood has been shed by religious fanatics, the majority of people who believe in a higher power are not militantly zealous. Before rejecting religion as being bloody, may I remind you that philosophies and political systems that utterly reject the belief in a god have ultimately opened the door to equally appalling abominations: Pol Pots Killing Fields in Cambodia, Hitlers final solution (rooted as it was in Nietzcheian philosophy), the military junta in Myanmar...the list goes on. So, in short, blaming religion in general for the despicable acts of human beings against other human beings simply does not bear up to scrutiny. Feel free to email me and we will discuss this further, if youd like to.

Respectfully,

Chad (christiansquidusn@yahoo.com)

Chad: POlPOT's underlings were not willing followers for the most part. These other godless dictators you mentioned did not use religion as much as fear of death to rule. The taliban's followers are zealots who are blinded by their own dogma and lies. They use Islam as a weapon, and the followers are mostly sheep who can't see the horror they are causing. Their minds have not matured past the early medieval times. I can blame religion for stopping the growth of an individuals sense of individuality and self-esteem. They are taught that they must actually be slaves to a sick fantasy, or suffer hell or death. They are punished for being human. There are christian bigoted ministers in tha USA who judge all people and situations by what they think the bible tells them. I have heard people on the radio describing how "christian" Barack Obama is, as if people don't qualify as worthy of any res pect if they don't bow down to their idea of jesus christ and live the life of a perfect saint. It is scary to hear these religious psychotics spout their pinhole view of the society- I have seen religion spawn leaders, henchmen, and blind followers. The leaders are mostly the biggest hypocrites for whose support the churches exist. You will always find some form of twisted mentality behind organized religion. It is the biggest con on the planet.

Dear Chad,

Your post was enlightening and after reading it I can agree that the problem does not lay entirely with religion. However, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the human heart burns black more often than not. How could anyone take advantage of another human being in this heinous way and then stand by and watch them be killed?

But religion does play a part. Especially the three largest monotheistic religions: Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. All three have bloody and disgusting pasts. All three are known for their violence even to this day.

What I can say for sure is that the laws of Islam are flawed fundamentally. The patriarchal society that exists to an extreme in Iran is simply archaic and disgusting. I cannot express the outrage I feel toward countries that promote tyranny. It truly makes my blood boil and want to seek vengeance against the judges, police officers, politicians, and other corrupt individuals.

I thank you all for the intelligent and honest discussion, and hope that in all our own small ways, that we can contribute to an end to these terrible acts!

Respectfully, Rohan

I am so tired of hearing "that's not Islam, Islam is a religion of peace" Really? There is no peace in Islam. If this is true, why are all you peaceful Muslims not speaking out publicly against what your people are doing to your religion and countries?? I have yet to see anything other than HATRED and RACISM in Muslims. I live in Dearborn, where all of them migrate to for whatever reason. They are coming in droves with their hatred and trying to take over the west. They are so proud of old country but you couldn't pay them to keep them there. U of M's tuition went up.. and why?? So WE could buy all the Muslims foot baths. Ya... Church bells can't ring around here but I am forced to listen to your call of prayer??? I have no problem with you people coming over here but how dare you EXPECT more than what we get? TERRORISM- Not Islam CHILD EXECUTION- Not Islam RADICALISM- Not Islam HONOR KILLINGS- Not Islam HATE- Not Islam THEN PROVE US WRONG!!!!!!!! If you are an outraged Muslim, DO SOMETHING. You are ALL just as bad as the above if you are willing to do nothing or speak out.. Loud enough. I could go on an on becuase I put up with it ALL DAY long. I hear you guys talk. I hear what you say about AMERICANS as you are standing on American soil. I see you guys go pick up your state aid checks. I see how you go into Target and Wal-Mart and steal. It's so sad that every store in Dearborn has to pretty much bolt the merchendise down so you won't steal it. You bug cashiers for deals and disounts and get pissed when you don't get them. You think you are better than us.. and you hate us. And if not, like I said, prove me wrong. It would be a refreshing change. I have a right to speak because I see the way you treat Americans and America. Not one has proved me WRONG.

i know this is wrong. but i would just like to point out that a lot of these comments here are suggesting that we should not kill but 'destroy' the people who are killing in the first place, to achieve so called peace. Why sink as low as them? they will be punished in due corse and to take ANY life is wrong, who are we to judge who should live and die? Killing for peace is like fucking for virginity. It wont work.
