SAVE THE WORLD FROM A NUCLEAR DAMOCLES SWORD

Published Friday, October 1, 2004

PARIS, First of October (IPS) Iran’s controversial nuclear program was the subject of articles in two major French newspapers, one warning on the dangers of a nuclear Iran and the other arguing on the reasons that pushes the Iranian ruling ayatollahs to build the atomic bomb.

Writing on 29 September 2004 in the centrist newspaper “Le Figaro”, Mr. Amir Jahanchahi, an Iranian businessman opposed to the Islamic Republic exhorts western leaders, most particularly those of Britain, France and Germany to refuse a “Nuclear Munich” that is pointing on the horizon by taking the risk of a “dishonoring” compromise with the Islamic regime.

The real question now is not to know if the present Iranian regime is seeking the nuclear weapon, but “when it is going to have it?

“If you do so, you risk as well throwing in the dustbin of history the memory of the millions of dead from the Second World War and bearing on your shoulders the responsibility of the millions that would result from a third war”, Mr. Jahanshahi warns, insisting on the facts that “never and for anything” the ruling mullahs would abandon their plans to obtain the nuclear arm.

In his view, the real question now is not to know if the present Iranian regime is seeking the nuclear weapon, but “when it is going to have it? And what can be done to prevent the irreparable?”

“To be sure, this regime, if not stopped, will have its bomb. And it would not be dissuasive, but offensive, ready in three years, according to western experts. The regime needs this arm as a mean to assert its regional power and domination. It would also contribute to extend its lifetime at home while extending its influence and ideology to other countries”, the businessman insists.

Contrary to some hawks in the United States and in Israel, Mr. Jahanchahi do not think that the Jewish State can repeat what it did in Iraq on 1981 when in bombed out Saddam Hussein’s nuclear reactor that was under construction in Baghdad.

Observing that a United States that is “badly” engulfed in Iraq has not the means, nor the wish, to invade Iran, Mr. Jahanchahi tells those who suggest the “possibility” of letting Israel doing “the job” of freeing the world from the danger of Iranian nuclear menace that “it is more easy to say than to do”.

SAVE THE WORLD FROM A NUCLEAR DAMOCLES SWORD-Body

“The islamists of Tehran who have invented the modern day kamikazes are not that naives nor their nuclear scientists children of chorus. Insisting, as the British-France and German trio is doing, to dissuade the Iranian regime from getting nuclear arm is as simplistic and angelic as Daladier and Chamberlain did yesterday facing the so-called pacifist intentions of the German Chancellor Adolph Hitler…”, he pointed out, adding that Iranian nuclear sites are scattered throughout immense territories and well hide, some n populated areas.

However, Mr. Jahanchahi calls on the free world to help the Iranian people to do the job by killing two birds with one stone: changing the regime and stopping the military-related nuclear nightmare.

For his part, Mr. Andre Fontaine, a former editor of the independent leftist daily “Le Monde” argue that under which principle one would forbid the Iranians to follow the Israeli example and to threaten it, “as Washington is doing, with reprisals?”

Noting that the Jewish State did build its atomic arms despite the French boycott imposed by Charles De Gaulle and observing that one can not blame Israel on that, considering the its geographic situation and the hostility of its neighbours, “why then blame Iran or talk of the possibility of Israeli attacks “inspired from that of the Iraqi nuclear reactor of Tamouz in 1981”.

Letting each one of making justice by itself would no doubt result in some fouls to play the Damocles nuclear sword one day.

Writing on the same day in the influential daily under the title of “Damocles Nuclear Sword”, Mr. Fontaine welcomes the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, of talking the same language than its French and German partners concerning Iran nuclear issue, -- one that he also doubts the aims – and warns against “letting each one of making justice by itself”, a process that in present world, would “no doubt result in some fouls to play the Damocles nuclear sword that hangs over the world since 1945!
