TEHRAN, 4 Apr. (IPS) In the first reaction to the decision of the United Nations Security Council, a hard line Iranian newspaper strongly attacked the stand taken by Russia and China and at the same time opposed Iran’s acceptance of American invitation of talks on Iraq.
For their first issues after the New Year, Iranian newspapers, absent from news stands for 14 days, dedicated their front pages to new year and other speeches by the leader of the theocratic regime, Ayatollah Ali Khameneh’i and President Mahmoud Ahmadi Nezhad, stressing on Iran’s determination to continue nuclear activities and opposing the “arrogance”, meaning the United States.
Russia and China demanding more time be given to the IAEA was a blatant case of blackmailing
Besides large coverage of the recent tremors in the western province of Lorestan, newspapers also covered the latest developments on Iran’s nuclear activities, including the presidential statement from the United Nations Security Council and Iran’s rejection of the move, highlighting the fact that despite the escalation, Tehran favoured dialogue.
The successful test firing of two new weapons, the multiple targets “Fajr (Dawn) 3” that can carry several war heads and has a flexible range according to the charges and the “Hout, an Arabic for a legendary fish) underwater torpedo that Revolutionary Guards commanders said with a speed of more than 200 nautical miles, is “the fastest” of its kind in the world capable of hitting the largest submarines and war ships
However, the hard line “Keyhan”, a mouthpiece of the leader, in an editorial by its executive editor Hoseyn Shari’atmadari, a high-ranking intelligence officer, strongly criticised the “vicious and deceitful” attitude of both Russia and China at the Security Council.
The 15 members Council, after weeks of heated debates between the three western and the two eastern permanent members, namely the United States, France and Britain that wanted a “bold message” to Tehran, giving the Director of the international nuclear watchdog two weeks to report on the state of Iran’s nuclear activities on the one hand and Russia and China insisting on the other to give Mr. Mohammad ElBarade’i at least six weeks and a soft pedalling statement, issued unanimously a document calling on the Iranian government to “suspend” all its atomic activities, particularly enriching uranium and urged the IAEA Chief to report Iran’s cooperation in one month.
“It looks like the Russians and the Chinese underestimates the intelligence of the great Iranian people by asking for more time”, wrote the daily, adding: “demanding more time be given to the IAEA was a blatant case of blackmailing”.
“Such a decision from the Security Council of the United Nations, an organism that since long time ago has violated all its legal and juridical frameworks by becoming a tool of American interests was not surprising, but what is more astonishing is the continuation of the presence of our country in the abrogated Treaty of Non Proliferation. The sooner we get out of this Treaty the better”, the paper stated.
Talking to America is a "big mistake and very dangerous"
Keyhan described as a “big mistake and very dangerous” Tehran’s decision to accept Washington’s proposal for talks about Iraq, observing that there are “any common points” between American and Iranian positions on the situation in neighbouring Iraq.
“For Iran, all the problems in Iraq come from one single source, which is the presence of American occupation forces in that nation”, the paper said, without mentioning the opposite’s point of view, which accuses Tehran of helping all Iraqi insurgents, thus preventing restoration of peace and stability in the war-torn country.
