Tehran, 24 Jul. (IPS) In one of the strongest attack on the system of the Islamic Republic of Iran, an influential Iranian journalist said the problems the nation face have their roots in the “centralization of all powers in one hand”, a direct reference to the leader of he regime, Ayatollah Ali Khameneh’i.

“What is happening, what we are witnessing are nothing but the result of he concentration of all powers in the hand of the “vali e faqih” (the Jurisconsult, or, in this case, Ayatollah Khameneh’i) and his direct control of the violent military-security gang”, said Mr. Isa Saharkhiz, a former director for the press at the Islamic Culture and Guidance Ministry under the previous government of president Mohammad Khatami, speaking at the meeting of some students groups which had participated in the international hunger strike movement that was launched by the prominent Iranian dissident Akbar Ganji in defence of political prisoners.

“What is happening, what we are witnessing are nothing but the result of he concentration of all powers in the hand of the “vali e faqih.

This was the harshest, strongest criticism ever expressed concerning the present Iranian political system, is considered as being “sacred”, because “divine” and its leader, Ayatollah Khameneh’i, political analysts said.

Mr. Ganji, an investigative journalist who spent six years behind bars for revealing the direct participation of several high ranking officials in the savage assassinations of several popular politicians and intellectuals on late 1989 started a hunger strike in London ten days ago, ending it in front of the United Nations in New York. His initiative was supported by thousands of Iranians in more than 40 cities around the world.

“A military-security gang led by a garrison-like party under the direction of Mr. Khameneh’i is controlling the whole nation and its apparatus and after having secured the control of all the three powers, it is now about to also take over the Khobregan (Experts Assembly), the only window of hope in a hopeless situation”, he added.

Mr. Saharkhiz who was jailed on charges of propaganda against the State and offending regime’s senior officials also criticized the three Executive, Judiciary and Legislative powers, pointing out that “all those in the decorative Government, in the paper head Majles (Iranian parliament) or the dependent Judiciary are but subalterns obeying orders, puppets with their hands and feet moving with invisible ropes, executing plans and orders cooked elsewhere”.

Since 2000, more than 150 publications of all kind, the great majority of them independent and pro reform have been shut down on orders from Mr. Khameneh'i, described by the Paris-based Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders) as one of the most dangerous predators of the freedom of the press.

Editor of “Akhbar Eqtesadi” (Economic News) and the monthly “Aftab” (Sun), both shut down by the Judiciary, Mr. Saharkhiz also criticized the recent order of Mr. Khameneh’i for the privatization of more than eighty per cent of all the State’s assets in nationalized companies, saying that the decision would weaken the private sector while allowing the wealthiest, (associated with the senior ruling ayatollahs and their families) to grab at cheap price what remains.

Earlier, Mr. Saharkhiz had ridiculed the tribunal which had condemned him, saying it “is a mockery that the court condemning a former soldier of the War (against Iraq) and someone that has helped the victory of the Islamic Revolution as a common law criminal”, adding that “it is also an irony to see the Voice and Visage of the Islamic Republic (the State owned, conservatives-controlled Radio and Television), an organ that has played a leading role in the character assassination and broadcasting confessions obtained under torture from dissidents standing as an accuser”.

“For six years now they (authorities) have repeated in their media that Akhbar Eqtesadi is a base of the enemy, that it’s Editor, Saharkhiz, is in charge of this base. They have claimed that we are friends of he Americans and on their payroll, receiving lots of money, that we are dedicated enemies of Islam. My demand is why not a single document has surfaced, given to the court to substantiate the charges”, he told the court, adding: “The result of the action undertaken by the Judiciary (which is under the direct control of the leader) is that hundreds of journalists and their families are out of work while many others have changed job and other forced to emigrate”, he told the court.
