Paris, 7 Aug. (IPS) Not only Iran must not be afraid of the big sale of American weapons to the Arab regimes of the Middle East, but it must rejoice, as they would end up in the hands of Muslim fundamentalists whom Iran is the main supporter.
This prediction was made by Mr. Hoseyn Shari’atmadari, an influential journalist regarded as the senior mouthpiece of Ayatollah Ali Khameneh’i and an ardent advocate of the “offensive policy” adopted by the fanatic Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadi Nezhad.
Iran has no reason to feel concerned about the planned arms sale to Arab countries by the United States.
“One must consider the sale of American weapons to the Arab countries as a good omen, a divine gift offered to the Muslim fundamentalists by their enemies”, Mr. Shari’atmadari, a high-ranking intelligence officer appointed by the leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran as Chief Editor of the radical daily “Keyhan”.
The article, published o 4 August and signed by was referring to the 20 billions US Dollars military hardware and package to Saudi Arabia and another 10 billions to the other members of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council that comprises, besides Saudi Arabia, the Island of Bahrain, oil rich Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman.
The project, which the Bush Administration says it is to help American allies in the Middle East to confront and contain “Iranian threats”, also considers 13 billions for Egypt and an unprecedented 30 billions for Israel.
Iranian officials say they are not “afraid” by the 10 year deal and explain it as a “plot” to “divide Muslims”; to “change the places” by presenting the Islamic Republic of Iran instead of Israel as the main enemy of Arab and Muslim nations in the region; a mean” to consolidate the “shaky and moribund” Jewish State while generating huge benefits “out of the pockets of the Arabs” for American arms manufacturers.
"The U.S. plans to introduce Israel as a friend of the regional (Arab) countries", Mr. Ahmadi Nezhad told Algerian media before leaving Tehran for Algiers on a two-day official visit, stressing that “Iran is not afraid” from the sale of American military weapons to the countries of the region.
He was referring to the four-day tour of the Middle East by Defence Secretary Robert Gates and State Secretary Condoleezza Rice to discuss a proposed military package, seen as a counterweight to Iran's rising influence in the region.
“Instead, they want to portray the Iranian nation, brother and best friend of Arab nations, as their enemy", he pointed out, calling at the same time on Israel to “go and find somewhere else for itself, leaving Palestine to its owners, the Palestinians”.
"In the past 20 years, the US sold Arabs more than 400 billions of arms. Is not better for the Arabs to spent the money for their economic development and the prosperity and hapiness of their people?", Ahmadi Nezhad asked.
For his part, Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, a Revolutionary Guard General, said during a rare press conference on Monday that “Iran has no reason to feel concerned about the planned arms sale to Arab countries by the United States”. “United States spares no efforts to support the Zionist regime”, he added, stressing that Washington is trying to create and “Islamic-Arab” alliance against Iran in the favor of Israel.
Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and the UAE, the buyers of American weapons, all and without exception, are ruled by shaky, unpopular, unstable and dictatorial governments.
He also repeated that all foreign forces must leave the area and let Iran and neighbours to assure the peace and security of the Persian Gulf. “Only regional countries can ensure the Persian Gulf security as a strategic waterway. In order to establish full security in the Persian Gulf the foreign forces should leave the waterway as soon as possible”, he stated, quoted by the Mehr news agency, which is close to the Supreme council on National Security.
While Washington try hard to highlight to the Arab and Muslim nations of the region the “dangers” of Shi’a Muslim, non Arab Iran, Mr. Hamid Karzai, the President of Afghanistan described Iran as his country’s “best and foremost friends”, and in Lebanon, Mr. Michel Aoun, a Christian general won the Sunday by elections for a Parliament seat against the anti-Syrian, pro-American Amin Gemayel, a former president, thanks mostly to the firm backing by the pro-Iranian Hezbollah organization.
“One has to take the sale of weapons by the United States to the Arabs as a good omen, for, in case of a war in the region, it would be between Iran in one side, Israel and the United States on the other and in such a likelihood, which Arab country would dare to use these equipments against Iran and in support of Israel?”, asked Mr. Shari’atmadari, considered as the Goebbels of the Iranian Fuhrer.
“Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and the UAE, the buyers of American weapons, all and without exception, repeat, without exception, are ruled by shaky, unpopular, unstable governments, with their peoples realizing the fact that they have dictatorial, middle age rulers”, the daily wrote.
“As a result, one can expect that the sale of 20 billions USD arms to Saudi Arabia, 13 billions to Egypt and some 10 billions to Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and the UAE, after the end of the sale process and their transfer to the buyers, would come down at the Islamist’s station and fall in their capable hands to be used against America, Israel and their regional clients and supporters”.
“Considering the above-mentioned points, which results from experiences in the past three decades, not only the sale of American advanced weapons to the region is not worrisome, but can be considered and must be considered as Divine gift sent by the ignorant enemies to the Islamists”, concludes Mr. Shari’atmadari, underlining indirectly that the final beneficiary would be Iran, the main supporter of Islamist fundamentalist organizations in the region like the Palestinian Hamas and the Islamic Jihad of Palestine, the Lebanese Hezbollah and the governing Shi’a Muslims in Iraq.
