Tehran, 16 Jul. (IPS) With summer time heath reaching new peaks, the commander of Tehran Police announced new crackdowns, this time targeting mostly young boys wearing “perverted western dress and hairs cut according to “pervert western models”.
As for women, Revolutionary Guard General Ahmad Reza Radan said for them, there is no change in the measures applied to those who do not respect strict Islamic dress codes, like above the knees manteaux and rain coats.
Boys with shorts panties, dresses having “pervert western marks (sic) and hairs cut using western pervert styles would be arrested.
From the first of Mordad (the Iranian month starting on July 23) police numbers will double to confront immoral behaviour", Tehran police chief stated, quoted by the media.
Boys with shorts panties, dresses having “pervert western marks (sic) and hairs cut using western pervert styles would be arrested, taken to special police detention centres where they would have to give the name of the hair dresser who has cut their heirs using “pervert western patterns” before asking their parents to come for taking them away, the Commander said, quoted by “Aftab” news website.
If the boy has a “perverted western hair dress, the parents have to take him to a hair dresser to arrange his hairs “normal looking”. If he is wearing “perverted western dress”, like short pants, or dresses having “western pervert marks”, the parents have to bring with them “normal clothing” to be changed at the detention centre before taking their progenitor away.
However, Mr. Radan did not explain who decides, or has decided which western dress mark or hair style are “perverting”, or what is a “normal, un-western” hair cut?
Asked by reporters if the law allows Police to take such measures and decide what kind of hair cut or dresses people have to have, General Radan said “bringing people to the right social path and behaviour” is an important duty that laws have bestowed over the Police force.
“Social order, preventing incivilities in the society are things that are strict duties of the Police. Especially when some models of hair cuts are directly connected with perversion, disturbing public order and minds. We shall stop them and we are not afraid of wave making by foreign media”, the Commander pointed out, adding that so far, at least 2.000 shops (hair dressings and dress shops, mostly selling women’s clothes) have been closed, but more are to be shut down.
Police patrol units in charge of public guidance, also known as “monkerat”, are all equipped with computer lap tops registering names and addresses of all those, men, women, girls and boys arrested for bad western dresses or bad social behaviour. “The first time, the guilty one would be given warnings in special Police detention centres and then freed. In case of repetition, he or she would be arrested and send to prison”, Mr. Radan said.
Mr. Radan did not explain who decides, or has decided which western dress mark or hair style are “perverting”.
According to him, the great majority of people have “greatly welcomed and are satisfied” with the hanging of what the authorities commonly describes as “hooligans, trouble-makers, rascals etc..” and added: “Personally, I’m very happy with hanging these rascals, these social nuisances”.
Critics of the fanatic President Mahmoud Ahmadi Nezhad say the new wave of repression is ordered by him, in order to “militarise” the society, install a virtual emergency situation aimed at preparing the nation to a possible attack by the United States
Though some die har faithful, including hard line clerics have in fact supported the measures, but the majority of the population, more and more young and restless and open to the outside world, are bitterly opposed, including some high ranking clerics like the Head of the Judiciary or officials inside the Government of President, who sees the severity of the move adding to the growing unpopularity of both the Government and the regime.
