Paris, 2 May (IPS) Mohammad Hoseyn Moussavian, a former senior Iranian atomic negotiator is reported to have been arrested on Monday first of May 2007.
Mr. Moussavian was a deputy to Hojjatoleslam Hasan Rohani, former Secretary of Iran’s Supreme Council of National Security and top coordinator on nuclear talks with the European Troika of Berlin, London and Paris in the one hand and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the other.
It is one thing to say that (the sanctions) are nothing but thorn papers, but the reality are far different.
“Mr. Moussavian has been taken away from his house on Monday first May by eight plainclothes security agents”, the BBC reported from its correspondent in Tehran, quoting sources that did not want to be identified.
A former ambassador to Germany, Mr. Moussavian became an outspoken critic of the way the present Government and negotiator team is handling the delicate and complex nuclear issue with the international community, accusing indirectly the authorities not telling the nation the truth about the real dangers the sanctions decided by the United Nations Security Council against Iran represents for the country.
“It is one thing to say that (the sanctions) are nothing but thorn papers, but the reality is that the decisions (by the UNSC) are mandatory for al the UN members, including Iran itself”, he told recently a group of journalists in Tehran, referring to Mr. Mahmoud Ahmadi Nezhad's repeated "assurances" that the sanctions have no serious meanings.
After the nomination of Mr. Ali Larijani as both the Secretary of the SCNS and the nuclear negotiations team, Mr. Moussavian moved with Mr. Rohani to the Strategic Research Centre of the Expediency Council, an important consultative body chaired by Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the regime’s virtual number two man.
However, while Iranian authorities are silent about the arrest, some media, including the Labour News Agency "ILNA" and the pro-reform daily "E'temad Melli" have confirmed, quoting unnamed Judiciary sources.
In a recent intervention, he had described his present situation of being that of an "exiled", saying emphatically: "I'm passing my exile time".
"Mr. Hoseyn Moussavian, a former senior member of the atomic negotiations was arrested at 7 PM on Monday (first of May) at his residence and taken to prison", the daily said on Wednesday. "The reason might be his recent critics of the Government concerning the conduct of the nuclear talks", it added, quoting "informed sources". ENDS MOUSSAVIAN ARRESTED 2507
