IAEA Report Is Ambiguous And Negative For Iran: Political Analysts

Published Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Paris, 25 Feb. (IPS)         As the Iranian regime’s highest-ranking officials, both civilians and militaries and their media continue to drum up the latest report of the international nuclear watchdog as a “great victory” for Iran, independent and reformist press and political analysts for the first time cast doubt and accuses the Government to lie to the people.

Since the publication of the report of Dr. Mohammad ElBaradei, the Egyptian Director of the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency expression satisfaction with the cooperation of Tehran with the Agency’s inspectors, all senior officials, from the fanatic President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad down to the small villages mayors, high-ranking clerics and officers have hailed the report as confirming that Iranian controversial atomic activities have no military diversion and since Iran has responded to all the suspending questions, therefore the issue is closed as a special issue with the IAEA.

If the report is in favour of Iran and is a victory, as the officials claims, why Iran’s case must be unilaterally declared close?

But for the first time, several reformist journalists and commentators underlined that though Mr. ElBaradei has expressed satisfaction with the degree of Iranian cooperation with his organization, nevertheless, he has also said that he could not confirm that Iranian nuclear activities have no military intentions.

While the State-owned, Leader-controlled radio and television channels broadcast a continuous stream of positive comments from pro-government experts congratulating the Iranian nation for the "successful" report, conservatives-controlled media continue to call for the “return” of the case from the United Nations Security Council to the IAEA and beams about the “triumph of truth and justice” over American and Western “arrogance and logic of shear force”.

The President congratulated the Leader and senior officials congratulated the President for standing “firm” to the American and Western pressures. "Iran has managed to prove that Iran's nuclear activities were peaceful and based on native domestic technology and know how. This is a victory achieved thanks to the guidelines provided by the Great Leader and applied by the courageous President", said one analyst.

"But if the report is in favour of Iran and is a victory, as the officials claims, why Iran’s case must be unilaterally declared close”, Mr. Yousef Mola’i asked in a very cautious article in the pro-reform daily E’temad Melli (National Reliance), the official organ of a political Party of the same name, led by former Majles speaker ayatollah Mehdi Karroubi.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad-2
Fanatic Iranian President hailed IAEA report as a "great victory for Iran".

Labeling the IAEA report as a “marvel of ambiguity which is a landmark of Mr. ElBaradei”, Mr. Mola’i added that though official have hailed the report as a “great victory” for Iran, “but in fact parts of the same report is very negative for Iran and even paves the way for new sanctions against Iran”.

But the most challenging articles contesting the “victory” that Mr. Ahmadinejad and his entourage claim Iran has obtained in its nuclear confrontation with the international community came from two Zeydabadi, Ahmad and Hasan Assadi, both writing in the London and Paris-based independent internet newspaper Rooz of 25 February 2008.

Under the title “It is Feasible”, Mr. Ahmad Zeydabadi, a well-known reformist journalist and commentator says one of the specialties of the Ahmadinejad Government is “deformation of facts”.

“When with some friends, we heard a television news casters shouting victory for Iran, quoting the report of Mr. ElBaradei, we immediately hesitated, asking ourselves if he could have not been right and correct.

“As he would continue to read quote from the report sections confirming Iran’s point of view and broadcasting message of congratulation, we went trough the full text of the report and realized that contrary to what the officials claim, the report, not only is ambiguous, but it cast serious doubts on the finality of the Iranian nuclear programmes”, Mr. Ahmad Zeydabadias pointed out.

With this Government, every thing is feasible, including fabricating and deforming facts

In fact, the United Nations' nuclear watchdog agency says it has "serious concern" about Iran's potential to assemble a nuclear bomb because the country has not addressed questions about questions concerning weapons designs, missile launch and fuels and more important of all, that Iran continue to enrich uranium despite call from the IAEA and the Security Council to suspend it.

“One of the friends present was astonished, asked how can a regime lie so bluntly, deforming stated facts contained in an official document? My answer was that with this Government, every thing is feasible, including fabricating and deforming facts. And this is the biggest problem with this Government”, he concluded.

The other Zeydabad, Hassan Assadi, who has no relation with Mr. Ahmad Zeydabadi, after mentioning same discrepancies, same lies same misquotations of Iranian official concerning the IAEA report, said the reason the officials are so jubiliant, calling on the people to go to mosques and prey the Almighty and the Leader and the President for this Great victory is “to warm up the election show”

“In these days were the economic situation of the people is lamentable, degrading every day, that the Government is under increasing domestic and international pressures, that the voters are indifferent to the coming (Majles) elections, the show of victory is a futile effort to create an fake electoral enthusiasm”, he commented, reminding the authorities that “whatever you say, you must know that resolutions passed by the UNSC are mandatory for all, including Iran”.

He was referring to a declaration by Mr. Ahmadinejad stating that “World powers can pass sanctions resolutions for 100 years, but we would ignore them and stand firm on our nuclear right”. ENDS 25208

Ahmad Zeydabadi
Ahmadinejad Government's bigest problem is that it can fabricate and deform official facts, says leading and influential journalist Zeydanadi.
